This Tuesday, the former president of Uruguay, José “Pepe” Mujica, died in Montevideo after a long fight against esophageal cancer.
“It is with deep pain that our colleague Pepe Mujica has died. President, militant, leader and driver. We are going to miss you very much, dear old man. Thank you for everything you gave us and for your deep love for your people,” said the current Uruguayan president, Yamandú Orsi, through his account on the social network X.
Born on May 20, 1935 in the Uruguayan capital, to a family of flower growers descended from the Basque Country, an autonomous community of Spain, Mujica began his political development in the sixties, when he resorted to armed struggle against the civic-military dictatorship, starting with the Tupamaros National Liberation Movement.
He was elected president of Uruguay for the period 2010-2015, in which he prioritized social investment for the sake of social welfare. He transcended the barriers of politics to become a global figure of simplicity and social struggle.
