The Great Mission of Venezuela Women (GMVM) participated in a meeting “Towards comprehensive care systems: local experiences with gender equality”, organized by the Non-Resident Office of the United Nations (UN) Women and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) within the framework of the International Day of Care, celebrated last October 29.
The purpose of this meeting was to create a space for multi-actor exchange and dialogue, which made it possible to identify key elements in the development of public policies and to recognize the participation of women to accelerate their economic empowerment and sustainable development.
The head of the Ministry of Popular Power for Women and Gender Equality (MinMujer) and national coordinator of the GMVM, Jhoanna Carrillo, began her speech with a thought by Liberator Simón Bolívar, from the Angostura Speech. “The most perfect system of government is the one that produces the greatest amount of happiness possible, the highest amount of social security and the greatest amount of political stability.”
He also mentioned that in Venezuela, before the arrival of the Bolivarian Revolution, 55.6% of Venezuelans were poor and of these, 25.5% lived in situations of extreme poverty and 14% of the latter in their nutrition. “Although the concept of the care system is relatively new, I can stress that it faces at least 3 major challenges: bureaucracy and indolence due to government policies that prevent investment in resources; inequality caused by the unfair distribution of wealth and individualism or indifference on the part of citizens.”
In this regard, he affirmed that with the arrival of the Revolutionary process in the year 99, a process of inclusion and social protection stands out, generating legal and social guarantees at first; in addition, he reported that the country currently has 28 missions, foundational missions and seven major new generation missions that are integrated into a systemic vision in 2013, created by the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros.
Carrillo said that in 2017, active resistance deepened, where the people were linked in attention to the creation of the Homeland System and the We Are Venezuela Movement, allowing more than 20 million Venezuelans to have direct access to social protection policies through the heritage system; in turn, he pointed out that a year ago the GMVM was created and explained the seven vertices that make up this great mission for protection in the life of women in all its stages.
This meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Non-Discrimination, Luis Laya; the president of the Feminist School of Southern Algeria Laya “Femsur”, Yngris Viez and the Director of International Affairs, Kamileydis Lorca .
