On January 2, 2025, the government of Argentina closed the Haroldo Conti Cultural Memory Center, the Telesur portal reported from this space, which for 16 years was a reference in the field of culture and human rights in that nation.

The center, which operated in the former concentration camp of the School of Navy Mechanics (ESMA), offered theater, literature, dance, photography, music and education activities.

The decision, taken by Alberto Baños, Secretary of Human Rights of the Nation, has generated a strong repudiation both among workers and among human rights organizations.

According to the official statement received on December 31, the measure responds to a process of “internal restructuring” and to the analysis of next year's schedule.

The Conti staff was informed that they will be on “passive guard”, and will be prevented from accessing those who have not joined the voluntary retreat promoted by the Ministry of Justice.

The workers of the Haroldo Conti center fear the presence of security forces to prevent nearby protests, something that has happened on other occasions during the administration of President Javier Milei.

Human rights organizations and political leaders have called for rallies to express their solidarity, starting at 10:00 local time, Telesur reported.

At its closure, workers have denounced an attempt to empty memory policies and a restructuring that would affect the continuity of trials for crimes against humanity.

Despite the resistance they have expressed, it is feared that the Milei Government will seek to change the curatorship of the place, disconnecting it from the period of State terrorism.
