After 39 years of tradition, in Pozo Hondo Ejido, Campo Elías municipality, Mérida state, “La Noche de Los Atoles”, was declared by Governor Jehyson Guzmán as Cultural Heritage of the entity.
During this year's edition, residents and visitors tasted 58 types of flavors of this traditional drink from the Venezuelan Andes. This December gala was attended by the regional president, who with the host, the mayor of Campo Elías, Simón Figueroa, toured all the stands to try not only atoles, but also Christmas dishes such as traditional hallaca and the typical sweets of this region.
It is important to highlight that the origin of this tradition dates back to the beginning of the community of Pozo Hondo, where families used to take atoll at night. The atolls were also given to travelers who came and went to and from Los Pueblos del Sur, as it was customary to give atolls to visitors.
The event was motivated by Father Pedro Moreno since 1979, however; it was after several years that Mrs. Clotilde Flores expressed the idea of holding the Night of the Atoles, an event that has been held on the second or third Sunday of every December since 1985 in the community of Pozo Hondo.
