The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, commemorated this Thursday 204 years since the abolition of slavery decreed by the Congress of Angostura throughout the country, at the request of the Liberator Simon Bolivar.

“204 years ago, the Angostura Congress accepted the request of the Liberator Simon Bolivar, who called for the abolition of slavery in Venezuelan territory, breaking at that time with that aberrant practice of the Spanish colony that had no place in the flourishing union of free nations,” said the head of state through his account on the social network X.

On January 11, 1820, the Congress of Angostura decreed the absolute freedom of the slaves who populated the lands of Venezuela and New Granada, who had united to constitute Gran Colombia.
