The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, expressed this Thursday the need to reorient the historical narrative, so that it reflects and respects the “ancient, diverse, mixed and beautiful history” of peoples.
During his speech at the inauguration of the Venezuelan International Book Fair (FILVEN), the National President criticized the “colonialist and Eurocentric” vision that has prevailed in history, which is why he urged us to recognize the deep roots and contributions of world cultures, instead of reproducing an imposed narrative that minimizes or ignores the identity of nations.
In this sense, he questioned the trend of constant Eurocentrism in educational institutions in a story that “everything was born in Greece, that everything was born in Rome”, even though he recognized the achievements of these ancient cultures and their contribution to the world.
President Maduro also highlighted the crucial role of the printing press in history, recalling that the Liberator Simon Bolivar carried with him “the artillery of thought”.
He highlighted how Bolívar built the most powerful, popular army ever known in American history, and he always kept in mind the importance of ideas, as well as tactics and military resources.
He also took a tour of the communication revolutions that have transformed humanity, from the arrival of cinema, radio and television, in the 20th century, to the present day with the “fifth revolution”: the digital revolution, emphasizing the “hegemonic domination of social networks, as a form of expression and communication in contemporary society”.
