On Wednesday commemorating the 100th anniversary of the planting of the writer and poet Rafael Bolívar Coronado, the president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, paid homage to this distinguished Creole, a reference for the values of Venezuela because he was the composer of the lyrics of the second national anthem, the Alma Llanera.
“On the centenary of his death, we remember the Venezuelan musician, poet and composer, Rafael Bolívar Coronado, author of the lyrics of Alma Llanera, a declaration of our national pride made into a song, and which today is recognized by all Venezuelans as the second national anthem,” said Head of State through X.
Son of the costume writer Rafael Bolívar Álvarez, Bolívar Coronado was born in Villa de Cura, Aragua state, on June 6, 1884, and died on January 31, 1924, a victim of an influenza epidemic in Spain.
He studied primary education in Caracas, but finished it in his homeland. He began journalism in 1912, collaborating with the publications El Cojo Ilustrado, El Nuevo Diario and El Universal, among other newspapers. Together with the musician and composer Pedro Elías Gutiérrez, he composed the zarzuela Alma Llanera, premiered in Caracas on September 19, 1914.
