The vice-foreign minister of Honduras, Gerardo Torres, denounced interventionist maneuvers on the part of the United States against the government of Xiomara Castro and related them to the positions held by Tegucigalp regarding Venezuela.

In an exclusive interview with TeleSUR, the vice-foreign minister of Honduras, Gerardo Torres, addressed the growing pressures exerted by the United States on the government of Xiomara Castro and the recent decisions taken by the Central American country in response.

According to Torres, “we have seen a whole series of pressure actions on the part of the United States that have been escalating against the decisions of President Xiomara Castro.”

And he warned that such acts of harassment on the part of Washington correspond to the position of Honduras with regard to Venezuela.

From the outset, the president welcomed the triumph of President Nicolás Maduro, once the Venezuelan electoral apparatus defined him as the winner of the elections last July and that has triggered a series of pressures against the country,” Torres said.

Torres highlighted that, despite the prohibitions imposed by the United States on other countries to attend Venezuela, Honduras decided to participate in a Latin American athletics event developed by the Latin American Armed Forces and held this year in the Bolivian Republic.

“The United States practically banned many armed forces and many countries from assisting Venezuela,” Torres said. The participation of Honduras in these events, despite the restrictions, was seen as an affirmation of the Central American country's respect for the sovereignty of Venezuela, in contrast to Washington's position.
