The Islamic Republic of Iran commemorates the National Day of the Persian Gulf, and since 2005, it has named April 30 as the National Day of the Persian Gulf, the date on which the expulsion of Portuguese forces from the Strait of Hormuz in 1622 is commemorated.
The anniversary is also considered a rejection of the futile attempts of certain regional countries to change the name of one of the planet's strategic and geopolitical regions.
This maritime body received its name during the Achaemenid Persian Empire, also known as Persian Hajamanishiya, around 330 BC.
Sir Arnold Wilson, in his acclaimed book The Persian Gulf published in 1928, writes that no waterway has been as important to geologists, archaeologists, geographers, traders, politicians, tourists and academics as the Persian Gulf.
