This Sunday, Japan is holding its general elections to renew 465 seats in the House of Representatives, after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi finalized the dissolution of the lower house of Parliament on January 23 of this year.
Until Sunday morning of February 8, participation reached just 17 percent of the electorate, representing a decrease of 3.2 points compared to the 2024 elections, Telesur said.
The new legislators will be elected from among almost 1,300 candidates, in elections that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has presented as a referendum on her administration, also highlighting the popular acceptance she has after taking office.
Takaichi, the first woman to govern an Asian country, seeks to consolidate her leadership just three months after being appointed head of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). His political formation could maintain control of more than 300 seats in the lower house, which would reinforce his position in power.
