The first Venezuelan woman to take the lead in the world karate ranking, Yorgelis Salazar arrived in Chengdu, China in search of the world title.

The karateque will begin action this Friday, August 8, with the women's 50 kg kumite preliminary where it shares the category with the Iranian Sara Bahmanyar, the Canadian Yamira Lahyanssa, the Algerian Cylia Ouikene, the Chinese Junhui Wang, in addition to the leaders of the world ranking of the discipline, the Italian Erminia Perfetto, the Croatian Ema Sgardelli, and the Kazakh number one Moldir Zhangbyrbay, press review by the Ministry of Sport.

This World Cup match represents for Salazar her second participation in world games, after winning the runner-up in Birmingham in 2022, where she was defeated 2-0 in the final against the Philippine, Junna Tsuki.

The Venezuelan arrived in Chengdu after conditioning her technique at the Naples training base with her coach Gian Luca de Vivo and sparring Eulimar Linares.

The Pan American Karate Federation awarded the prestigious Panamerican Karate Athletes Awards 2024 as a badge of the representative of the most outstanding Venezuelan kumite on the continent, highlighting her performance throughout the year in the events of the Karate 1 Youth League, Karate 1 Premier League and Karate 1 Series A.

In 2022, Salazar made history by becoming the first Venezuelan to reach number 1 in the world ranking in her discipline, after winning gold medals in two of the four events of Premier League 1 of Karate.
