The head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, announced this Thursday, March 13, that her government is promoting a legislative proposal to ban “bloody bullfighting” in the Mexican capital, in addition to creating a figure to ensure that the bull is not punished with any sharp object during the festivities.

Last Tuesday, the 11th, parliamentary groups extended the session by agreement to discuss and send, in the event of a positive opinion, the popular initiative that advocates the prohibition of bullfighting to the plenary of the capital's Congress, reported the SWI portal.

Before this happens, Brugada announced a new initiative for bullfighting regulation that will limit the cape and the crutch as instruments for fighting, will shorten tasks to 10 minutes, will not allow the use of swords and flags, and will sheathe the bull's horns so that they don't harm.

He also stated at a press conference that this measure responded to the sentiments of a citizen majority, and noted that it will bring Mexico City to the forefront in animal protection.

However, he did not clarify which majority supposedly is in favor of this bullfighting format, when the popular initiative seeking the ban had 27,000 signatures, compared to more than 300,000 people who attended the 27 festivities at the city's main bullring in 2024.

Brugada said that the measure responded to the agreement with the sectors involved.

He explained that since the Constitution of the capital conceives animals as “sentient beings”, all citizens have a duty to animals and, therefore, there is no place for a show in which they are mistreated.

He also recalled that the Mexican State must guarantee the proper treatment of animals.

The bullfighter and deputy of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Pedro Haces, told EFE that there will be freedom of vote for his parliamentary group if the initiative reaches Congress next Tuesday, 18.

He also explained that this measure of bullfights without death is done out of ignorance, since the bull will be sacrificed after the celebration.

For his part, Pepe Saborit, director of the Mexican Bullfighting Association, told EFE that none of the professionals and their unions in the bullfighting sector have accepted bloodless bullfighting (it does not cause bloodshed).
