With the participation of universities, teachers, students, non-governmental organizations, social movements and other actors in the area, the public debate on the impact of schoolwork convened by the Ministry of Education began this Wednesday in Caracas.

In this regard, the head of the educational portfolio, Héctor Rodríguez, stated that they agreed on four directions to carry out this discussion “in all spaces and with the greatest possible breadth”:

The first direction, the minister continued, is to systematize what already exists on this topic, such as research, plans or experiences. The second is to generate lines of research in universities “to support in the most scientific way possible the decisions and recommendations that are made.

As a third line, Rodríguez identified consulting with families and classroom teachers. “One of the things I have found is that a large part of public policy is built by teachers in bureaucratic functions or in investigative functions (...) The eyes of the classroom teacher must be put on the table, so must the representatives, the extended family, understanding that in Venezuela, representatives are not only mom and dad, we have many grandparents, grandmothers, uncles, older brothers who are representatives, and we also have to listen to the students,” he argued.

Finally, according to a press release from the educational portfolio, the fourth direction is to generate recommendations after all this process “with the greatest possible consensus”, to properly design policies in this regard.

The Minister of Education thanked the participation and receptivity of those invited to this first meeting “to improve, optimize and make more efficient use of this tool that is the school task”, while defining space as “a dynamic for the debate on education in general and all issues”.

To organize these four directorates, a large commission will be formed and will be coordinated by Deputy Minister Alejandro López.
