A total of 593 surgeries have been performed so far this year at the La Guaira Ophthalmological Center, thanks to the National Surgical Plan, according to information from the newspaper Última Noticias.

Mariana Moncada, director of the ophthalmological center, specified that among the pathologies treated, cataracts and pterygium, better known as ocular fleshy, stand out.

“ This week alone, 30 patients are being operated on per day, exclusively with cataract surgery , which represents care for more than 150 patients in five days. All procedures are free thanks to the joint efforts of our president, the Minister of People's Power for Health and the governor of the state,” said Moncada.

Nelare Bermúdez, the single health authority in La Guaira, recalled that these interventions have a high cost in the private sector. “ Cataract surgery can reach 5,000 dollars per eye, and today we have patients who are undergoing surgery for the second time, recovering their vision thanks to the National Public Health System,” he said.
