The Government of Nicaragua decided this Friday, February 28, to withdraw from the Human Rights Council of the United Nations (UN) and from all activities related to that international organization and all its satellite mechanisms, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

In a review of the Prensa Latina website, he points out that in a statement addressed to the president of that council, Jürg Lauber, the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry described these mechanisms as disrespectful.

He affirmed that Nicaragua does not see itself as part of and complicit in abuses against the sovereignty, equality of States and the dignity of peoples.

The document refers to the self-described “Report of the Group of Experts on Human Rights on Nicaragua” included in agenda item two: Annual Report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Reports of the Office of the High Commissioner and the Secretary General.

Signed by Chancellor Valdrack Jaentschke, the text noted that once again the Council violates its own regulations contained in resolution 62/51 approved on March 15, 2006.

Nicaragua alleges that that document established the principles of objectivity, impartiality and non-selectivity in the examination of human rights issues and the obligation to eliminate the application of double standards and politicization.

“The report of the self-styled Group of Experts, which Nicaragua does not recognize, as well as previous reports, statements, communiqués and updates from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, are evidence of the double standards and the politicization of each of these mechanisms,” he stressed.

He added that such mechanisms daily exploit Human Rights, using them as a pretext to interfere in the internal affairs of States and disrespect sovereignty.

According to the text, these mechanisms constitute not only true methods and political platforms to discredit the work of the Sandinista Government, but they are also an obstacle to the economic and social development of the Nicaraguan people.

In this regard, the Foreign Ministry stated that they intend to prevent progress in education, health, housing, infrastructure, food security, energy, water and sanitation, among other achievements.

“The self-styled Group of Experts, the Office of the High Commissioner and the Human Rights Council have become the sounding board for those who attempted peace and tranquility, and are the perpetrators of the multiple murders, kidnappings, rapes, aberrations and outrages against the Nicaraguan people,” he emphasized.

In this regard, he highlighted the destruction and unquantifiable damage to the national economy, “the same ones that today celebrate and promote the imposition of unilateral coercive measures that the UN General Assembly has condemned and declared illegal because they violate international law.”
