The Undersecretary of the Interior of the Chilean government reported that this Monday, May 26, the number of people injured by the tornado that devastated the city of Punta Arenas, in southern Chile, increased to 19, and caused damage to at least 250 homes, reported the EFE website.

“So far, no one has had to mourn any deceased. If there are 19 injured people who have various injuries, all of whom are being treated by the appropriate health services,” Ramos explained.

In addition, he indicated that “the supply of drinking water has been restored to 100% and 85% of the electrical power system has already been restored”, so the number of people without electricity “has fallen to almost 5,000.”

Classes are still suspended in this tourist city in the Los Lagos region, located 1,000 kilometers south of Santiago.

Videos on social networks showed the way in which the tornado destroyed several streets in the center, taking away aluminum roofs and public furniture, in addition to destroying cars and breaking glass in dozens of houses.

The Chilean Meteorological Directorate reported that this is a moderate tornado, of category EF1, whose wind gusts could range between 138 and 178 km/h.
