The Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz Angulo, stated that the kidnapping of Venezuelan migrants in El Salvador was the result of complicity between Nayib Bukele and Donald Trump.

During his participation in the Coffee in the Morning program, Ruiz held the United States responsible for the application of more than a thousand unilateral sanctions against Venezuela, with the objective of destabilizing the country and generating social pressure. These measures, he said, have caused a massive migration of Venezuelans who have been criminalized abroad, although less than 1% of them have faced legal proceedings.

The defender explained that the agreement between the two governments included payments to keep migrants in Salvadoran territory, at a lower cost than private prisons in the United States. He assured that it was a for-profit operation for both parties.

He also compared this situation with other cases of exploitation, in which Venezuelans were deceived with promises of work and ended up in networks of sexual exploitation. He emphasized that, in this case, the structure was organized by both States and not by independent criminal networks.

Ruiz recalled that the sanctions directly affected Venezuelans, blocking funds for medical care, including already approved donations.

It concluded that most of the migrants were looking for decent living conditions and were being used as a resource to obtain economic benefits through their suffering.
