To make visible the human rights of hearing impairment in Venezuela, the Office of the Ombudsman asked the population and the State to make progress in this area and guarantee the inclusion and non-discrimination of this population, this instance reported in a note published on its website.
The Ombudsman, Alfredo Ruiz, urged society to promote the importance of inclusion and respect for the rights of deaf people and sign language interpreters, stressing that their active participation, in all aspects of social life, is essential to building a more equitable and just community.
In addition, he stressed that the recognition of sign language is essential to ensure equal opportunities and access to information for the deaf community.
“The linguistic diversity and culture of the deaf community enriches our society and is a pillar of human rights,” he said.
He said that it is crucial that all sectors of society work together to eliminate obstacles that limit the full participation of people with hearing impairment or deaf people. “Inclusion isn't just a right; it's a shared responsibility,” he said.
Ruiz recognized deaf people with hearing disabilities who have assumed political, academic, sports and cultural leadership; sign language interpreters, Venezuelan sign language teachers, mothers, fathers, caregivers and families who accompany and support people with hearing disabilities and those who daily promote and defend the rights of this important sector of the population.
