On January 24, 1945, the Red Army liberated the Polish city of Krakow from Nazi occupation.

Since 1939, Krakow has endured one of the worst and bloodiest persecution carried out by the Nazis against Jews. Three days later, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) liberated Auschwitz.

The action was called Operation Tempest, a code name given by members of the Armia Krajowa and the Polish resistance to a series of anti-Nazi uprisings.
