The medical authorities who care for Pope Francis held a press conference this Friday, a week after his hospitalization, to ensure that he “is not in danger of death”, and stress that “his heart is perfect”, but he is not out of danger either and he will remain in the Gemelli hospital “at least for the next week”.

Professor Sergio Alfieri and Doctor Luigi Carbone indicated that Francisco's lungs, victims of a “polymicrobial infection”, are obstructed by “viruses and bacteria”, making treatment more complex and requiring special care.

“The Pope, a frail 88-year-old patient, has been prescribed extensive pharmacological treatment, and he is fully aware of his frailty, as he himself told the doctors, however, he is a man who spares no effort, who works hard and whose hospitalization is almost the only way to force him to rest,” said the medical specialists.

Francisco is better, he gets up, reads, works, signs documents and also spends time in the hospital chapel, says Professor Alfieri, but he has a chronic illness that can go into acute phases.

In this context, doctors prefer to keep him under surveillance in the health center, where he is surrounded by a team of specialists, including pulmonologists and cardiologists. The Pope has specifically asked doctors not to hide anything about their state of health.
