In a statement, the President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, expressed, on behalf of the People of Venezuela and the Bolivarian Government, his deepest regret for the physical departure of Pope Francis at 88 years of age.
“Pope Francis was a transformative spiritual leader, whose clear and courageous voice denounced the inequalities of the dominant system and called for building a more humane, more just and profoundly supportive world. From its Latin American identity, it gave impetus to a Church committed to the causes of the poor, to the protection of Mother Earth and to dialogue between cultures and religions”, highlights the statement.
The text also highlights that the Pontificate of Pope Francis “will be remembered for his profound choice for the excluded, for his pastoral courage and for his capacity to renew hope in peoples”.
“Venezuela will always remember him as a sincere friend, like the Pope who resolutely promoted the canonization of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, a symbol of the faith of the Venezuelan people and a spiritual bridge between our struggles and our hope. We ask him, together with Mother Carmen Rendiles, to receive him in the glory of God,” he says.
