The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, lamented this Monday the physical departure of Jorge Bergoglio, Pope Francis, whom he described as “an extraordinary religious, ethical and spiritual leader.”

Through his Telegram channel, the head of state emphasized that Francis was “a bastion of Christian life consecrated to God (...) loved by all of us, Christians, and by all religions. He energized, renewed and gave great prestige to the Catholic Church. A great Argentinian, a great universal Latin American!” , he said.

He emphasized that Venezuela and the South American people had in the Supreme Pontiff “a renowned friend, a special being, of deep human clarity, a man of light and hope”, and he also emphasized that he was “a guide who showed with truth, along the path of love, justice and brotherhood.”

“We will continue following that path with the magnificent example you bequeathed us, a lifetime at the highest spiritual, ethical and moral level,” said the Dignitary, recalling Pope Francis' contribution and decision “in favor of Venezuela, by offering the world two saints born in our land: José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles, two standards of Christian life.”

In this regard, Maduro, in the name of the Venezuelan people, confirmed his love and admiration for the Pope. “God was always your guide and protector, and today you are at his side, as one of his greatest collaborators, brother Jorge Bergoglio. Honor and Eternal Glory to the Pope of the peoples of the world!” , he exclaimed.
