The president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, sent a message this Monday to the organizations and social movements of Argentina and the Global South, on the 19th anniversary of the defeat of the Free Trade Area for the Americas (FTAA).

Argentina, with Néstor Kirchner at the helm, was the epicenter of a historic battle on the path to independence of Our America. It is a trajectory, it is a journey, it is an effort that must be maintained with the same intensity with which we obtained that great victory 19 years ago in times like this,” said the Head of State in a broadcast on his social networks.

The Venezuelan Dignitary recalled that at that Summit of the Americas, in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Commander Hugo Chávez, “master of several generations of rebels and revolutionaries from Latin America and the Caribbean, of Our America and the world”, was fighting “a battle that meant a point of arrival and a starting point of the struggle that we saw from the working class, from the popular movements against neoliberalism”.

He recalled that with the FTAA, the United States tried to impose its neoliberal model on the continent, stressing that “they always use the word freedom, free, to mask the truth of domination, of colonization, of colonial subordination. The FTAA agreements , which were being discussed globally and country by country, would have meant the absolute destruction of the economic apparatus of the entire continent,” he criticized.
