The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, rejected opposition proposals on Tuesday that call for U.S. military intervention in Mexican territory under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.

During his morning press conference from the National Palace, Sheinbaum recalled that “the last intervention of the United States caused was that they took half of our territory from us.”

The president stressed that “we are not anyone's colony, we are a sovereign and independent country”, and warned that any call for foreign intervention represents a denial of national autonomy.

Although he acknowledged the pain caused by crimes such as the assassination of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, on November 1, 2025, he stated that “that is not why the intervention of the United States is going to be called.”

Sheinbaum stressed that Mexico can receive support from the United States as a “neighbor, partner and brother people”, provided that it occurs within a framework of collaboration without subordination.

“What can help us? Of course they can help us. What teams have that can help us provide us with information? Welcome,” he said, but insisted that such support must respect sovereignty and not imply military presence or external control.

The president defended the security strategy promoted by her government and by the previous term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, describing it as legal, with legal support and focused on the creation of the National Guard as a public institution responsible for the security of the population.
