For the first time, 881 positions in the Judiciary, including the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation, in Mexico, were elected by citizens.
The Mexican presidency, Claudia Sheinbaum, highlighted the relevance of the process during a press conference and described it as a success.
The president analyzed the results of the elections, comparing them with the presidential elections and asserted that the opposition says that very few people participated, but it turns out that those who participated are more than those who voted for her a year ago.
Sheinbaum recalled that in 2024 the National Action Party (PAN) obtained 9.6 million votes; the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), 5.7 million; and the Citizens' Movement (MC), 6.2 million. “These organizations for political purposes called not to participate in the judicial election. They were betting that no one would come out to vote,” he said.
In addition, the president minimized criticism about the low turnout. He said he expected at least the same number of voters as in the first popular consultation of 2021, when 7.0% of citizens decided to try former presidents, RT reported.
He emphasized that Sunday's election turned out to be an “unprecedented, impressive, wonderful and democratic” process because it doubled the votes of that consultation.
On Sunday, nearly 13 million people participated in the historic judicial election.
Voters had to choose from more than 3,400 candidates who will be the nine ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN). In addition, they also chose hundreds of magistrates and judges from federal and state minor courts, who will take office on February 1.
Given the magnitude of the elections and the number of positions in dispute, the National Electoral Institute (INE) has not yet provided definitive results. As of Monday morning, only 40% of the cells had been counted.
