The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, this Monday, May 19, recalled that the current form of appointment of ministers of the Judiciary, established during the government of Ernesto Zedillo, gives the President decisive influence, questioning whether this method is more democratic than popular election.
“We are renouncing that right that the President of the Republic had. And why do we give up on it? Because we want the people to choose, because that is democracy,” he highlighted 14 days before the election of the Judiciary takes place, the Telesur website reported.
He stressed that the decision reflects his government's commitment to being “of the People, by the People and for the People of Mexico.”
Sheinbaum also questioned the Mexican opposition for intensifying its criticism as the judicial election approaches, but expressed confidence that the Mexican people will demonstrate their support for democracy on June 1.
The president contrasting the judicial election with what she considers authoritarian practices of the past, where decisions were made “from above” without popular participation.
In that regard, he emphasized that this election will allow the People to decide who will be their judges, strengthening democracy.
In addition, he stressed that his movement, the Fourth Transformation, fights for freedoms, democracy and against electoral fraud, seeking to guarantee the well-being and dignity of all Mexicans.
Sheinbaum reaffirmed his commitment not to stray from the People and to defend the principles of his movement, which was built on the basis of popular struggle.
He also stressed that the transformation that his government seeks is a continuous process, where the Mexican people, who regained their dignity during the Government of Manuel López Obrador, continue to be the protagonist.
