This Thursday, popular protests were held in Ecuador in several provinces in rejection of the increase in gas prices and other government measures by President Daniel Noboa.

Although the mobilizations were scheduled for Thursday afternoon, people began to leave ahead of schedule, Prensa Latina reports.

“While the Noboa family is getting richer, they stick their hands in the town,” demand the demonstrators who gathered in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, according to videos on social networks.

In Quito, the mobilization started from the headquarters of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute to the Historic Center, where the Carondelet Palace, headquarters of the Executive, is located.

The actions were called for by the United Workers' Front (FUT) and the Popular Front, which brings together a dozen civil groups.

Among the measures they reject, stand out the elimination of fuel subsidies and the consequent increase in the prices of Extra and Ecopays gasolines, because this measure will increase the cost of living, the news agency reports. In addition, the demonstrators condemn the increase in Value Added Tax from 12 to 15%.

In Ecuador, in October 2019 and June 2022, social organizations, indigenous people, workers, students and various sectors took to the streets and staged historic strikes in rejection of the neoliberal agenda of then-presidents Lenín Moreno and Guillermo Lasso, who tried to eliminate fuel subsidies.
