The United States (US) continues to threaten to impose secondary sanctions on Russian Federation trading partners that are illegal and a violation of the sovereign rights of other nations, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
The Donald Trump administration recently warned India, the People's Republic of China and Brazil about possible restrictions on their Russian energy imports. Matthew Whitaker, U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Organization (NATO), described these measures as the “obvious next step” to end the conflict in Ukraine, details Russia Today (RT).
Peskov replied that “we heard a lot of statements that are essentially threats and attempts to pressure countries to cut off trade relations with Russia.”
“We believe that sovereign states should have, and have, the right to choose their own trading partners, partners for economic cooperation and to independently determine the forms of cooperation that serve their national interests,” he added according to the media's press release.
During an interview last Monday in Bloomberg, Whitaker stated that buying Russian oil is equivalent to sponsoring hostilities in the Ukraine conflict. He said that imposing sanctions on importers would cut off Moscow's main source of income.
