The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, defended the right of peoples to freedom and criticized imperial actions to prevent it.

During his State of the Nation Address, delivered to the South African Parliament, Ramaphosa noted that “we cannot consider ourselves free as long as the peoples of Palestine, Cuba, Sudan, Western Sahara and other places suffer occupation, oppression and war.”

In this regard, he stressed that freedom must be understood as a universal and non-selective principle, and reiterated that South Africa will maintain a foreign policy based on the defense of international law, the self-determination of peoples and multilateralism, a historical line forged after the end of apartheid and linked to the principles defended by figures such as Nelson Mandela.

In reference to Palestine, the president stressed the need for a just and lasting solution to the conflict. Regarding Cuba, he mentioned the difficulties derived from sanctions and external pressure; as well as to Sudan and Western Sahara, territories marked by protracted conflicts and disputes over sovereignty.
