Starting at midnight on May 8, a 72-hour truce with Ukraine will apply in the Russian Federation, which will last until midnight on the 11th of the current month, said the spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova.

The initiative was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day against Nazi Germany.

“At midnight from May 7 to 8, a 72-hour truce will take effect on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the Victory, which was announced by the President of Russia,” Zakharova said.

The Russian president seeks to guarantee the security of commemorative events, in which he plans to bring together more than 20 world leaders from countries such as China, Brazil, Slovakia, Cuba, and others. Following the announcement, Ukraine and the United States expressed their support for a cessation of hostilities, but proposed that it be indefinite rather than temporary.

Putin also stressed that he made this decision for humanitarian reasons and as a way to honor the 80th anniversary of the triumph over Nazism.

In turn, the statement emphasizes that the measure was adopted at the initiative of the president himself, in his role as commander of the Armed Forces.
