This Thursday, the deployment of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) troops in Ukraine is unacceptable to the Russian Federation, said Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov.
“As for the discussions about the deployment of so-called military contingents on the territory of Ukraine, this is absolutely unacceptable to us. This poses a real critical threat to all European and global security,” Peskov told reporters.
The spokesman emphasized that Moscow is committed to continuing its efforts to achieve peace. “We advocate achieving peace and guaranteeing the interests of our country. It is an indispensable condition. This work is still ongoing,” he said.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in March that Moscow sees no possibility of reaching an agreement on the deployment of a foreign contingent in Ukraine and added that the debate over its shipment pursues “an openly hostile objective”.
He also stressed that this step would be considered as the official involvement of NATO in the conflict.
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service reported last year that the West would deploy an alleged peacekeeping contingent of about 100,000 people to Ukraine to restore the country's combat capacity.
The Kremlin spokesman recalled that the deployment of peacekeepers is possible only with the consent of all parties to a conflict. According to him, it is premature to talk about peacekeepers in Ukraine.
