The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, reaffirmed her position of defending national sovereignty by rejecting the proposal of the President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding the possible deployment of American troops in Aztec territory to combat drug trafficking.

Sheinbaum explained that, during a telephone conversation with his counterpart Donald Trump in April, the U.S. president suggested the entry of his country's army into Mexico as part of a joint strategy against organized crime. However, the Mexican president replied that the national territory is “inviolable” and that her country's sovereignty “is not sold, loved and defended.”

Sheinbaum emphasized that his government is willing to collaborate with the United States in the exchange of information and security strategies, but ruled out any possibility of foreign military intervention on Mexican soil, according to a press release from RT.

Sheinbaum's statements came after The Wall Street Journal published details of Trump's pressure to increase Washington's military participation in the fight against drug cartels. In response,

Sheinbaum reiterated that his country is free, independent and sovereign, and that his government will continue to defend these principles in any international negotiation.
