The sprinter Santiago Quintero improved his personal record in the decisive hurdles round with a time of 13.74, in the U20 National Championship, which earned him the gold medal and climb the South American ranking in the category, being surpassed only by the Brazilian Odair Goncalves of 13.72 seconds.
The 17-year-old athlete from Zulia, who
had already won the national title in the 400 hurdles with 52.71 during the
first day of the championship, this time he dedicated himself to hurdles to complete his
dominance in the specialty.
Quintero qualified for the final stage of
the race with the second fastest time (14.76) behind Oscar Rodríguez, from La
Guaira, who recorded 14.38 and Ariff Pérez, from Yaracuy, who completed the triad,
dropped 15 seconds in the semifinal of the hurdles, according to the Ministry of Sport press.
In the final round, Quintero demonstrated his
speed, power and coordination by successfully overcoming the 10 obstacles
distributed over the 110 meter hurdles that allowed him to cross the finish line
first at 13.74 seconds.
The national podium of the race was completed
by Oscar Rodríguez from Guairense with 13.80, a new personal top, which repositions him in the region's table
in third place; and the Yaracuyan Ariff Pérez
closed the podium in third place with 14.29, who soon after added another podium in the high jump where he won with 1.88 meters.
