From August 11 to 17, teachers and workers in Argentina's national universities will begin a national strike across the country, in order to highlight the deterioration of wage and budgetary conditions that seriously affect the public university system.
The call, reported on its TeleSUR portal, is promoted by the Federation of University Teachers (FEDUN) and the Argentine Federation of National University Workers (FATUN), with the support of grassroots unions.
This action was joined by the National Federation of University Teachers (CONADU), which also denounces the unilateral closure of parity by the Government, without consensus or progress in negotiations.
FATUN warns about the impact of the adjustment on real wages and working conditions, after noting that the situation jeopardizes the continuity of academic functions.
The phrase “Without decent wages, there is no possible university” summarizes the central demand of workers in the sector.
CONADU spokespersons maintain that there has been a cumulative wage backlog since Javier Milei came to power, without opening up joint ventures or concrete answers.
In this regard, the general secretary of CONADU, Carlos De Feo, indicated that the average salary of a university teacher is around 400,000 pesos (equivalent to 300 dollars), which has caused at least 10% of the teaching staff to resign and leave.
In addition to the strike, the unions have defined a scheme of visibility activities in each house of studies, which will last until August 24. These actions seek to inform the university community and generate institutional pressure to reverse the situation.
The crisis also affects university social projects, pension funds and planning for the 2025 academic year, whose continuity is at risk.
The unions warn about the structural impact that these conditions may have on the higher education system.
In parallel, a new Federal University March is being prepared, with a tentative date in the first half of September.
Both FEDUN, FATUN and CONADU Histórico call on the entire university community to mobilize in defense of public education, the budget and labor rights.
