The spokesman for the Thai Foreign Ministry, Nikorndej Balankura, announced his country's decision to accept Russia's official invitation, as president of the BRICS in 2024, to join the economic bloc as a partner state.

After a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, held on December 24, he explained that the Thai Foreign Minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, sent a letter that same day to his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, to whom he expressed Bangkok's desire to join the group.

The BRICS, initially comprised of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, was extended with the entry of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia and Iran on January 1, 2024. Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are currently partner states of the alliance.

The block currently represents nearly half of the world's population, 40 percent of global oil production and about 25 percent of goods exported.
