This Friday, the People's Republic of China fixed its position in the global debate on nuclear weapons; it also made it clear that it will not join, for now, possible disarmament negotiations.

The Chinese delegation to the United Nations (UN) expressed its position during a conference, held in Geneva, in response to calls from the United States (USA) to incorporate Beijing into a new framework after the expiration of the START III treaty.

Likewise, China's deputy ambassador to the European headquarters of the UN, Jian Shen, argued that there is a substantial gap between his country's nuclear capabilities and those of Washington and Moscow.

China's nuclear capabilities are in no way at the level of the United States or Russia, so China is not going to participate in nuclear disarmament negotiations at this time,” the diplomat said.

In this regard, China insisted that the primary responsibility for disarmament lies with the States with the largest arsenals. According to the delegation, these powers must first move forward with deep, verifiable and legally binding reductions, before proposing broader multilateral processes that include countries with significantly lower capacities.
