This Tuesday, November 11, the Dominican Republic suffered a general blackout that completely interrupted the national electricity service, as confirmed by the Dominican Electricity Transmission Company (ETED) in a statement.
According to the Telesur website, the cause was a malfunction in the transmission system, specifically in the province of San Pedro de Macorís.
The ETED explained that “the outputs of the generation units of the San Pedro de Macorís Electricity Company (CESPM) and the Quisqueya Power Plant” caused a cascade of fire that affected AES Andrés and other transmission and generation plants in the national system.
The entity noted that “a large technical team has been deployed to work to correct the incident, with a view to restoring supply in the shortest possible time.”
The president of the Unified Council of Distribution Companies (CUED), Celso Marranzini, indicated that the service is expected to be restored in two or three hours, although he specified that “the Transmission Company is reviewing exactly what happened and all the necessary information will be given”.
The power outage affected critical services such as the Santo Domingo Metro and the cable car, forcing passengers to evacuate rails and cabins on foot. In addition, “vehicle chaos” was reported in the city of Santiago, with traffic collapsing due to the failure of traffic lights and signalling systems.
In addition, instabilities were recorded in several solar plants distributed in different regions of the country. Authorities are investigating whether such failures in renewable generation are linked to the main event, although so far a direct link has not been confirmed.
The ETED expressed “its deepest apologies to the population for the inconvenience caused” and thanked them for their understanding in the face of this “fortuitous” situation. No physical injuries or casualties were reported, but the impact on mobility, communication and the provision of basic services was significant.
The event coincides with a period of growing energy demand and challenges in modernizing the national electricity grid.
