According to the United Nations (UN), one in six children, some 473 million, currently lives in war zones around the world, a proportion that has almost doubled since 1990, according to data from UNICEF.

In this regard, the organization explained that the year 2024 has established itself as one of the worst ever recorded for global children, warns the UN agency.

Catherine Russell, executive director of UNICEF, said that this year has been “one of the most disastrous” for children affected by conflict, both in number and in terms of the impact on their lives. The organization points out that the world is experiencing the biggest wave of conflicts since the Second World War.

In this regard, the organization expressed its deep concern about a series of interrelated problems in conflict zones: educational deterioration, child malnutrition, difficulties in accessing health care and the devastating impact on children's mental health. Particularly alarming is the situation of women and girls, who face a greater risk of rape and sexual violence in conflict contexts.
