This Wednesday, the United Nations (UN) fears a possible humanitarian collapse in Cuba if the United States (USA) imposes an oil blockade on the island, said the spokesman for the global mechanism, Stéphane Dujarric.

“The Secretary General (of the UN, Antonio Guterres) is extremely concerned about the humanitarian situation in Cuba, which will worsen, if not collapse, if its oil needs are not met,” Dujarric said, according to a Sputnik review.

Guterres, explained that for more than three decades the UN General Assembly has urged an end to the embargo imposed by the United States on Cuba, whose authorities describe as a policy of “economic, financial and commercial blockade”.

“The Secretary-General urges all parties to seek dialogue and respect for international law,” Dujarric stressed.

For his part, US President Donald Trump decreed last week the imposition of tariffs on imports from countries that sell or supply oil to Cuba; he also declared a national emergency due to the alleged Cuban threat to national security.

The Cuban Government described the U.S. threat of an oil blockade as an attempt to strangle the island's economy, and to make the living conditions of its people intolerable.
