This Friday, the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, presented the twentieth package of European Union (EU) sanctions against the Russian Federation.

According to Von der Leyen's statement published on the EC website, the EU will add 43 more oil tankers to the framework of the new sanctions package that are part of the so-called ghost fleet, bringing the total number to 640.

In addition, the new package of sanctions imposes a total ban on maritime services related to deliveries of Russian crude oil.

According to Von der Leyen, this measure “will further reduce Russia's energy revenues and make it difficult to find buyers for its oil.”

In addition, the EC plans to introduce sanctions against 20 Russian regional banks and banks from third countries “involved in facilitating illegal trade in sanctioned goods”.

“We are listing 20 more Russian regional banks, and we will take action against cryptocurrencies, the companies that trade them, as well as the platforms that allow cryptocurrency trading, to close an avenue of circumvention,” the note specifies.

The Commission also proposes to introduce new bans on the import of metals, chemicals and critical minerals from Russia that have not yet been sanctioned, worth more than 570 million euros.
