The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, through its Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, reported that during the long period of aggression, the country's assets were frozen, while migrants were subject to campaigns of stigmatization, criminalization and xenophobia.

During his speech at the 61st regular session of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations this Monday, Gil denounced that the country has been the victim of fierce campaigns of multiform aggression, marked by political, media and economic pressure.

The foreign minister recalled that “it all began with a narrative built on false assumptions, biased reports, media manipulations and a systematic campaign to present Venezuela as a state that violates human rights. It wasn't a legal debate; it was a political operation.”

“It even led to practices that embarrass universal conscience: forced transfers, degrading detention centers, inhuman treatment that in and of itself constitutes serious violations of fundamental rights. All of this happened before the eyes of the world and of the bureaucracy of the multilateral system,” said Gil.

The diplomat said that it is “necessary to remember that the United Nations General Assembly has repeatedly adopted resolutions that recognize that unilateral coercive measures are contrary to international law and generate serious impacts on the enjoyment of human rights, particularly economic, social and cultural rights.”

In this context, he stressed that the “United Nations Human Rights Council has warned about the negative effects of these measures on access to health, food, development and decent life of affected peoples, stressing that they should not be used as instruments of political pressure”.
