Venezuela develops AI with sovereign and secure technologies

The policies promoted by the Bolivarian Government in the area of Artificial Intelligence (AI) aim at the development of sovereign and secure technologies for the people, Raúl Hernández, Deputy Minister for the Development of Information and Communication Technologies of the Ministry for Science and Technology (MINCYT), said Monday.

According to a MINCYT press release, the Deputy Minister explained that among the policies that the Venezuelan State works on is within the legal framework, in this sense, the Artificial Intelligence Act is being promoted, which is currently undergoing a second discussion in the National Assembly (AN).

Also, as explained in an interview conducted by Venezolana de Televisión, there is the National Plan for Artificial Intelligence and the collaboration with the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) for the creation of the Center for Science, Technology and Innovation.

Hernández specified that the National AI Plan consists of three pillars: the training of specialized talent, the creation of a robust computing infrastructure for the development of sovereign models and the infrastructure of the aforementioned ALBA AI agency.

With regard to the training of human talent, the Deputy Minister recalled that the Bolivarian Government, through the MINCYT, inaugurated Training Nodes at the national level, where specialized AI classes are held, “to be able to strengthen and have the capacities created here in the national territory for what is coming to us in the future.”

He stated that for talent training, it is necessary for people to want to develop in AI.

With regard to the Artificial Intelligence Act, Hernández stated that this text takes as its pillar the “human use of artificial intelligence and also the ethical use of artificial intelligence”.

He also referred to the recent agreement signed between Venezuela and the People's Republic of China, which will promote the development of AI in strategic areas of the country, such as the health sector, education, electric energy, agriculture, science and technology, tourism, among others.
