The Group of Friends in Defense of the Charter of the United Nations, coordinated by Venezuela, held a special event under the slogan “The transformative power of unity: Advancing multilateralism and diplomacy for a better future of peace and development for all”.
The activity, held at the headquarters of the United Nations (UN), in New York, for the International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace, brought together representatives of countries from all regions of the world committed to multilateralism and the promotion of the values and original spirit of the principles and purposes contained in the UN Charter.
During his speech, the Ambassador Permanent Representative of Venezuela to the UN, Samuel Moncada, denounced the attempts of certain powers to weaken the multilateral entity through unilateral practices and the use of force and economic coercion.
He noted that “history shows us that abandoning multilateralism leads to chaos and war,” and made an urgent call to revitalize the spirit of unity that originated the UN almost eighty years ago.
“We cannot allow the multilateral system that we have built together to end up as the extinct League of Nations,” warned the Venezuelan diplomat, warning of the danger of replacing international law with a logic of “power by force” and criticizing unilateral interventions, the criminalization of migrants, trade wars and pressure exerted against officials of international organizations, practices that must be confronted collectively to preserve the achievements made in the last 80 years.
Moncada reaffirmed that Venezuela defends a multicentric worldview, in which different political and economic models can live together without impositions. “State sovereignty and the principle of equality must be the foundations for the peaceful resolution of conflicts and global challenges,” emphasized the Venezuelan representative, calling for cooperation and diplomacy as indispensable tools for the 21st century.
The event was attended by delegations from Cuba, Eritrea, Zimbabwe, Belarus, China, Nicaragua, Iran, Russia, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Kazakhstan, Mauritania, Morocco, Senegal, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malaysia, the Philippines and Tunisia, among others, who expressed their support for multilateralism and their concern about the growing threats to the international system.
