The permanent representative of Venezuela to the
Geneva (Switzerland) headquarters of the United Nations (UN), Alexander
Yánez, rejected this Tuesday “the prevalence of hostile and
baseless statements, not verified or verified with the Venezuelan State”, in the oral
update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (DDHH), Volker Türk.
The diplomat took part in the Interactive Dialogue on the oral
update of the representative of the multilateral organization on the
situation of human rights in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, read by the Deputy High
Commissioner, Nada Al-Nashif, in the context of the 55th ordinary session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Yánez pointed out that the oral update presented derives from
Resolution 51/29, adopted “with the support of an increasingly small
group of countries, which implements the Human Rights Council in order to advance its geopolitical agenda.
These countries insist on intervening in the internal
affairs of Venezuela, they intend to protect our institutions,
renouncing de facto genuine dialogue and cooperation.”
He recalled that the High Commissioner, Volker Türk, visited Caracas last year at
the invitation of President Nicolás Maduro Moros and verified the real
reality of the country, directly and not through the
distorted perspective of the media and networks of global communication.
The ambassador regretted that the team of the Office of the High
Commissioner, present in Caracas since 2019 and ceased this year, “has moved away from its mandate
of impartiality, carrying out improper actions,
favoring coup and terrorist groups, in contravention of the agreement that regulated” their stay in the country.
“The statement of the Office that motivated the cessation of
its functions in Venezuela was in perfect correspondence with the story of the most radical
sectors of the Venezuelan opposition,” he said, while
specifying that they are planning and holding talks to envision when it is necessary “a new process of technical cooperation at
the appropriate level and
dimension, without political interference or partialization.”
During his speech, Yánez stressed that “you cannot
talk about human rights in Venezuela without addressing the terrible impact of
illegal unilateral coercive measures (MCU), imposed by the United States Government
and other countries, that violate international law and are
responsible for a true crime against humanity.”
In this regard, he was encouraged by the High Commissioner
's pronouncements on the negative impact of illegal MCU, stating
that they hinder the enjoyment of human rights by the Venezuelan people, and
recommending that they be lifted because of their harmful effect.
“These illegal measures (almost a thousand) have resulted in the loss
of more than 232 billion dollars in the last decade, without considering
the loss of human lives. It is a crime against humanity that we have
reported to the International Criminal Court.”
He mentioned that Venezuela is heading to hold presidential
elections this year, being the 31st election in 25 years of the
Bolivarian Revolution, which reaffirms the people's unquestionable democratic vocation.
Finally, “we reiterate our rejection of the politicization and double standards promoted by very specific sectors in this worthy Council against Venezuela” and “we reaffirm our full willingness to continue collaborating with a Universal System of the United Nations”.
