The Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Affairs, Yván Gil, on behalf of President Nicolás Maduro and the People of Venezuela, thanked the Russian State Duma on Tuesday for its strong call to the international community, to the parliaments and to the system of the United Nations (UN) to condemn the increase in the military presence of the United States (USA) in the Caribbean Sea.

In addition, through his Telegram channel, Foreign Minister Gil also praised the Russian parliament's condemnation of “threats directed against Venezuela and attacks on boats, which have been classified as extrajudicial executions by UN experts.”

In this regard, he stressed that “Venezuela deeply values Russia's firm solidarity in the defense of our sovereignty.”

During this day, the State Duma unanimously approved an appeal to the parliaments of UN member states and international parliamentary organizations regarding the escalation of tensions in the Caribbean Sea, near the borders of Venezuela.

“ We address our colleagues from different countries with a single message: let us try, for our part, to make the world a fairer place,” said the president of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, during the consideration of the appeal, in which he stressed that we cannot return to the colonial practices of the past, something that “certain countries and their politicians want”.

The document notes that “Washington's aggressive and provocative actions against a sovereign State contradict generally recognized principles and norms of international law enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and in Article 88 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and also lead to a dangerous increase in tensions in the Latin American and Caribbean region.”
