A historic day for the world! The Catholic people greet and accompany our Pope Leo XIV in this emblematic Eucharist for peace, harmony and love that must always prevail as fundamental values of humanity,” said the mayor of Caracas, Carmen Meléndez, during the Pope's enthronement ceremony, held on May 18.

Through his social networks, Meléndez stated that he is in the city of Rome in the company of Ambassador Roy Chaderton and the Venezuelan ambassador to the Holy See, Franklin Zeltzer, “we are in this important responsibility that our President Nicolás Maduro has entrusted to us.”

“The Catholic people are celebrating the enthronement of Pope Leo XIV, and Venezuela is present. Blessed be our supreme pontiff, and may God accompany him at all times in this important responsibility,” he stressed.

It should be noted that Pope Leo XIV presided over the Holy Mass at the beginning of his Petrine ministry in a St. Peter's Square full of faithful and civil and religious authorities.

Before the ceremony, the Pontiff passed by popemobile, for the first time, among the thousands of people present, who were also crowding along the Via della Conciliazione, which gives access to the square.

Leo XIV greeted everyone “with a heart full of gratitude” and with one of Saint Augustine's most famous phrases: “You made us, Lord, for you, and our hearts are restless until it rests in you” (Confessions, 1, 1.1).

The Holy Father recalled the last few days, experienced intensely with the death of Pope Francis, “who left us like sheep without a shepherd”. In the light of the resurrection, we are facing this moment and the College of Cardinals met in a conclave to elect Peter's new successor, “called to protect the rich heritage of the Christian faith and, at the same time, to face today's questions, concerns and challenges”.
