Venezuelan pitcher Jesús Luzardo excelled in his first season with the Philadelphia Phillies, a team in which he consolidates himself as a key player in the rotation, with a fundamental performance in April to keep those led by Rob Thomson in the fight within Major League Baseball.
In his most recent outing, the left-hander worked seven innings of a race against the Marlins, bringing his ERA to 2.08, making him one of the best starters in franchise history in his first five starts.
In the Expansion Era (since 1961), Luzardo ranks behind Cliff Lee (0.68 in 2009), Steve Carlton (1.47 in 1972) and Pat Combs (1.71 in 1989) as the fourth left-hander with the lowest effectiveness in this period.
In addition, his performance places him among the league's elite this April. His clean run average is the sixth best among the circuit's qualified starters, surpassed only by Kodai Senga (0.79), Yoshinobu Yamamoto (0.93), Nick Pivetta (1.57), Mitchell Parker (1.85) and Freddy Peralta (1.91).
Luzardo's success has been backed up by an effective combination of its shipments. Its four-seam line is still one of its main weapons, but its new sweeper has been key this season. This pitch became his best resource for strikeouts and for failing rival batters, bringing a new level of dominance to his repertoire.
