The plan for the revival of Venezuelan volleyball carried out by the Ministry of Popular Power for Sports (MPPD) and the High Mesh Federation returned results in record time with the qualification of the under-17 women's team to the World Championship in the category, which will be held from August 05 to 15, 2026, in Santiago de Chile.
In a publication on the MPPD website, he points out that eight months ago, the sports minister, Franklin Cardillo, launched the permanent concentration plan for the new breed of volleyball players who, under the leadership of the legendary Cuban Olympic player and coach, Ihosvany Chander, would work full time to face the challenge of obtaining one of the three places awarded by the South American Championship in Lima, Peru.
It specifies that the under-17 women's national team had been absent from this competition for 10 years, and in its two previous appearances, in the Canelón 2011 events in Uruguay; and Tarapoto 2025 in Peru, it had barely finished in sixth place, with an overall balance of three wins and 10 setbacks.
In this third incursion into Lima, the challenge was enormous because Venezuela was placed in group B in the company of the powerful Argentina and Brazil, which have two titles each, and the rising Colombia.
To obtain the ticket, Venezuela had to finish in the top two of its difficult key.
Antillean coach Ihosvanny Chambers recognized that preparation work was essential to register Venezuela for the first time in a women's under-17 World Cup.
“It's wonderful what these girls have done, all the time they were together and focused with the support of the Ministry of Sports and the federation on this new project,” the coach told the FVF.
Regarding the difficulties of moving forward in a key where Argentina and Brazil looked like favorites, she said that she always maintained confidence in the potential of the players.
“We knew it was a very difficult group, but since we started training we always instilled in the girls the desire to fight, no matter what name was in charge. They had to play their game and with determination they won the victories,” said Chambers.
The game remained without dominator until Venezuela liquidated with an effective double block, the cannon shot of Yalesca Colina for place four for 28-27, while a weak shot at the mesh of the coffee machines handed the second set to the tricolor.
Colina was once again the most outstanding player in the national attack with 20 points against Colombia, as she did against Brazil with another 24 points.
