Ukraine is planning to hold presidential elections and a referendum on possible peace agreements with the Russian Federation, with the intention that both consultations take place before May 15, the Financial Times reported.
The media indicates that Kiev agreed to these processes under pressure from the United States (USA), in order to end the conflict with Moscow.
For its part, the North American newspaper reported that the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelensky, could announce the call for the referendum and elections on February 24. People from their environment told the newspaper that they were willing to organize the vote in the shortest possible time, despite logistical difficulties.
In this regard, the Verkhovna Rada would work in March and April on legal changes that would allow elections to be held under martial law. However, the Ukrainian media outlet RBK Ukraina indicated that, as long as there is no security, there will be no announcements about elections.
For this reason, Washington intends that both votes will be held simultaneously, while the US delegation in Ukraine, led by Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, urged the Ukrainian side during their recent meetings that it would be better if those votes were to take place soon.
