On September 26, 1960, Commander Fidel Castro, leader of the Cuban Revolution, raised his voice for the first time before the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN).
In his speech, he praised the name of the Cuban people while denouncing the terrorist policies of the North American empire.
“We must unmask those who negotiate with war, those who enrich themselves with war. We must open the eyes of the world, and teach it who are those who negotiate with the destiny of humanity, those who negotiate with the danger of war, especially when war can be so dreadful that there is no hope of liberation, of saving the world,” he emphasized.
Commander Castro expressed the importance of peace over war in the world as a premise for the continuity of existence on the planet.
“Wars, since the beginning of humanity, have arisen, fundamentally, for one reason: the desire of some to strip others of their wealth. Disappear the philosophy of plunder, and the philosophy of war will have disappeared! (applause.) Colonies disappear, stop the exploitation of countries by monopolies, and then humanity will have reached a real stage of progress!” , he pointed out.
This memorable speech is one of the longest in UN history, recording four hours and 29 minutes.
64 years after this event, Fidel's words continue to vibrate in the hearts of the peoples of Latin America.
